Some kidney stone patients in our community have had prolonged indwelling stents due to insufficient insurance coverage. However, delayed stent removal can often lead to stent calcification, and they may end up experiencing more pain.
As forgotten stents are a matter of patient safety, experts advise that urologists schedule stent removals with patients before discharging them. Doing so may reduce the chances of them avoiding a follow-up visit because of financial constraints. This may minimize the incidence of retained stents and the subsequent discomfort of dealing with a calcified stent.
